I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately asking me “Hunter why would I use the raw scene when I could use Depop?” That’s a great question. The difference is The Raw Scene is a community and not just a marketplace. Depop is good for posting products and creating your own store but The Raw Scene is built for designers that enjoy connecting with their customers. When starting The Raw Scene we wanted to build a place that people could talk about and talk to new designers, fashionistas, and the trendsetters that are a part of our community.

When creating The Raw Scene we wanted a platform for unique clothing and unique views on how fashion is perceived. We are a community of unique trends that you won’t find at a box store and for good reason. We are here to support the little guy who has the best ideas and best clothing but maybe isn’t the best at sharing. Our job is to connect your unique interests and tastes in fashion to that guy. Better yet have a conversation with him about why he made the piece and what kind of effort it took to bring his vision to life.

Luckily for Depop, they are big enough that they don’t need to advertise. When most people think of reselling or creating their own store they think of Depop. While this is good for Depop it makes it hard for them to send people to your store. You end up getting buried and have to do all of your own promoting. On the other hand, The Raw Scene is just getting started and we are gaining traction quickly. This means your store is getting Consistent views from people that have never heard of your store before. This is the prime time to join The Raw Scene because we can grow together and create our own waves in the fashion world!

How to smooth a Wrinkled background in 30 secs with photoshop.

 If you are like me and you are ballin on a budget and don’t have a huge amount of money to spend on a full studio setup for portraits then you are most likely using a wrinkled sheet as a backdrop. Did you know you can fix this in 30 seconds with photoshop? Probably not because every video and tutorial out there goes way in depth on how to do it professionally and precisely. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to change the game. Nobody’s got time to do all that when you have 100+ portraits to go through. I’ll keep this post short since its way easier than everyone makes it.

1. Put your picture into photoshop (duh)

2. Duplicate the photo – cmd/crtl + J (you should always do this anyways)

3. Click the “quick selection tool then Click the “Select Subject” button

4. Press CTRL/CMD + j to make a duplicate of the selection.

5. Create a blank layer and then use the paint bucket tool to fill it with a neutral color of the background. If you don’t know how to do that Click the paint bucket tool > click the color selector > use the dropper and pick a not too dark or not too bright spot.

Now you are done (finished pic at the top). I can not understand why everyone makes it so difficult. I’ve done this on many different types of backdrops and different colors and it works 99.9% of the time and looks good. Please give it a shot and let me know how it goes for you. Getting good product pics is way easier than it seems. You don’t need a whole studio set up to get studio results. You can easily use a bedsheet, two cheapo lights, and a phone to get great pictures. Also if you have the option, photoshop is very nice and really allows you to make it look like the real deal. This article I’m going to teach you my tips and tricks on taking pro shots! The set-up

Backdrop

I’m not kidding when I say I use a bedsheet. A white bedsheet (non-fitting) from your local store of choice will run you about $10 and I would recommend the biggest size you can get.

Lights

You have a couple of options with this and as you might know, lighting is everything. You can go super budget and get two lights and rig up your own stands with a ladder or whatever you can find. Option two is buying a light stand kit from amazon for $50. If you have the cash to spend I would definitely do it because it will make so much of a difference to have good lighting.

The Camera

I currently use my big old camera but when I’m in a pinch I use my phone. It’s crazy how good of pictures phones take now so if its all you have then don’t be scared to use it! My most liked picture on my photography Instagram is from my phone. Also, you don’t need a brand new iPhone, anything that takes pictures will work. If you aren’t getting good quality, check your lighting!

Editing

I edit all my photos with Lightroom and photoshop. Does this mean you need both of those to get good quality pics? Absolutely not, I edited my first paid shoots with nothing but a couple of free apps (Lightroom app, Polar, Face-tune). if you have a computer I would suggest getting a light-room. But if you are on a budget then you can use gimp or Pixlr. If you like the look of my pics I have a preset pack in my store!

I know you’re on a budget so ill share a secret. I simply boost the contrast, shadows, saturation, sharpness, and then take away some of the highlights. You don’t need a whole lot on product pics but this edit will make it look sharp, clean, and professional.

People are very visual. I don’t care how clever of a title you have, if your pictures are bad quality then people wont buy. You can have professional quality pictures for less then $60 (assuming you have a phone) and you can up your chances of getting sales an incredible amount just by taking better pictures. If you have a love for thrifting or you are like a lot of people I know who have half a closet that they haven’t touched since last year, then re-selling your clothes is a perfect way to get rid of them and make some extra cash! in this article I’m going to go over how you can find great clothes and where to sell them!

Where Do I Get Good Clothes?

lucky for you there are about as many thrift stores as there are coffee shops in the PNW. All you have to do is go in there and get to digging. don’t be afraid to pull out your phone and do some research before you buy. It’s amazing the stuff people will just give away! A lesson I learned is to buy things that you would wear, buy things that make you go “Hmm do I really want to sell this?” The reason I say this is because it’s hard to be an expert on someone else’s style but its easy to see something and be like “yeah I would wear this so I know for a fact someone else will!”

What if you don’t want to go thrifting? First of all, have you tried thrifting? I’m not sure what’s not to like but of course, I have a solution! Look into your very own closet or your friend’s closets and buy their stuff. The number of clothes I have in my closet that I don’t wear but I know would look good on someone else is unbelievable. That’s why I started re-selling, I had a gold mine in my closet and I didn’t even realize it!

Where Do I Sell Re-Sell Clothes?

Selling re-sale clothes can be a little tricky at times because you are competing against thrift stores, retail stores, and other re-sellers. You will have to put in some work when you start, but it pays off in the end. When starting, I would post them on the Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay. Or even post them online to your social media and see if anyone is interested. I have friends that have made a killing just selling clothes to other friends.

Thrifting is something I’ve done since I was a kid with my mom. There’s something great about going and finding the hidden gem that fits perfect. While its an awesome feeling to find that gem, the amount of times I go thrifting and end up with jack outweighs the good times by far. Another problem I have is finding so much stuff that is super cool but it doesn’t fit. thats why my solution is to bring those great finds to you!

I take all the dirty work out of thrifting and make a one stop shop for all your second hand needs. My main goal is to make sure that its a quality piece in great condition so you don’t have to worry about there being random stains, rips or weird smells! If you are looking for something unique and the retail stores aren’t cutting it anymore maybe it’s time to try a different route.

There is one fashion piece that is an absolute necessity for everyone. It’s the one thing that every outfit needs and if you don’t have it, I don’t care how cool the outfit is, its not going to work! What is this magical piece of fashion that I’m talking about? It’s simply confidence.

If you are confident in what you put on this morning, whether its pink crocs or a fanny pack, you can make it work. Wear it loud and proud and you will be amazed how many people will give you compliments! Now what are you supposed to do if you think you don’t have enough confidence to pull something off? Fake it until you make it!

Confidence isn’t something that you are born with, while some people naturally have confidence it’s something that can be practiced. It’s a skill, not something you either have or don’t have. Wear whatever you want and I’m telling you, act like its the coolest thing ever and people will listen! I hope this gives you a boost in the right direction to start wearing whatever you want. Any photo that’s taken is art. But I believe that in order to stand out amongst all the other people that have a camera in their pocket you need to find your artistic edge. What I mean by this is creating your own style, a specific niche that people can follow. There are a couple of ways to do this so I’ll break it down in this post and explain how it will help!

First, it starts with simply snapping the picture. Something as simple as taking the picture with a weird looking angle can make a picture stand out. The framing of your subject, whether it’s a landscape shot or portrait is absolutely one of the most important things in photography. If you practice and study framing, you can improve your photography and give yourself that edge very fast.

This next is going to seem obvious, it’s simply editing. There is no better way to make your pictures stand out than with good editing. It seems obvious but I see to many people make the same mistakes by completely copying someone else’s style! Now there’s nothing wrong with trying to mimic someone’s style because thats how you can learn fast but if your goal is to stand out then you can probably guess why this doesn’t work well! Editing is fun and it’s the step where you can create a color theme for your photography. When someone’s looking for a photographer and they see your unique style, and learn that you’re an expert with that style, they will call you to set up a shoot. It’s as easy as that.

These two tips can go a long way. It took me a long time to figure out that creating my own style is way more fun than chasing down someone else’s style. Of course you can do whatever you want and whatever makes you happy, this is a common thing I say in my posts for a reason. Thrift shopping has been around for a long time and I promise it wasn’t made popular by Macklemore. I know a lot of people who would never step foot in a thrift store and I know people who are in there every other day finding the best clothes that people no longer want. In this post I’m going to talk about what I like and dislike about thrift shopping and why I think everyone should try it at least once!

I’ll start with what I don’t like. I don’t like all the clothes that are in there that don’t get swapped for new clothes. This makes it hard to want to go back because I don’t want to find the same clothes every time. The other problem that I run into is how expensive they price some of their items. The good thing about these problems is that they are easily fixed by going to a different thrift shop because there are so many it’s unbelievable.

Now let’s talk about why I really like thrift shopping. As you know i’m a big fan of unique fashion and there is no better place to find it then a thrift shop. It’s crazy the amount of good quality clothes you can find with the tag still on and currently trending. If you have a small amount of patience then finding something that you like is not a hard task. You just have to dig  deep and that’s part of the fun!

One other thing that I hear people say is that they are scared of wearing something that’s second hand because they don’t want people to think they can’t afford nice clothes. The only thing I can think to say to that is –  who cares! It’s not about the brands that you wear its about how you style it. If I get a compliment on something that I got from the thrift store I always tell them where I got it and I’ve never had someone give me a sour response. It’s always “wow I love thrift shopping, good find” or “hmm, I thought it was all old crappy clothes, maybe I should try it”.

1. Willows

Willows is a shop in Grand Central Vancouver and their main focus is giving everyone the opportunity to look great and feel amazing. It’s made for customers of all ages and they make sure to have trending pieces so that everyone can find something that screams “this is me”!

Customers are saying that their customer service is top notch and that they are very helpful in finding the perfect clothing for the perfect occasion. They are always bringing in new products so every time you go in they have something fresh to look at!

2. Not Too Shabby

Not Too Shabby is located downtown Vancouver and they are a women-powered boutique that likes to provide a friendly, girl-friend experience. They say you will walk in because you are curious but you will leave with that special piece for either you or for a gift for that special occasion!

Customers are saying that it’s a very interesting and inspiring place due to the interior design aspect that the owner brought with them from past experiences. Customers say that it’s their go-to spot for when they need a gift for their significant other, so if you gents out there need to buy a gift anytime soon make sure to check them out!

3. Wild Fern Boutique

Wild Fern is located in downtown Vancouver and they are a boutique that has a little something for everyone. They have top brands from Brixton to The Great PNW! The owner says it’s the perfect place to stop after checking out some of the breweries that are right around the corner!

Customers are saying that when they are walking with their husbands it’s the perfect place to stop because it has sections for guys. It gives the ladies some time to shop around while the guys have something to look at too! There are a lot of shops downtown Vancouver that are more female friendly so if you need a place that can tailor to both male and female then Wild Fern Boutique is for you!

4. Chic Boutique

Chic Boutique is located in the Hazel Dell area and they are more of a specialized thrift store with a high turnover of inventory. This one is going to be more directed towards my thrifters out there who enjoy second hand clothes at a great price!

Customers are saying that it’s a great place to find clothes for all occasions and they have a good selection of accessories. This is a place where you can get paid to bring in your old clothes so that’s a plus if you like the Platos Closet style!

5. Modao

Modao is a resale store located around the corner from Chic Boutique in Hazel Dell. This shop is created by a mother/daughter team and their goal is to have people leaving the store asking themselves “Is this really a resale store?” It has unique, gently used clothes in a setting that is fun and easy to shop!

Customers are saying they can easily find higher end pieces at amazingly affordable prices. Another customer said that it’s a style hunters dream!

1. The rule of thirds

The first tip is more of a rule that most photographers follow. When I look at beginner photos the first thing that sticks out to me is the positioning of the subject. No photo is wrong but using the rule of thirds is a great way to improve positioning. Tthe rule is breaking your pictures down into thirds horizontally or vertical and putting the main focus on one of those imaginary lines. The reason for this is that it more pleasing to the eye. Try it and watch how quickly you improve!

2. Using a lens attachment

My favorite type of photography is taking portraits. On my camera I only used a 35mm lens and I loved it. While using my phone, unfortunately I no longer had my beloved lens. But when I got a wide angle lens for my phone everything changed. At last, I could take my signature portraits right from my phone!

3. Get low

In Portraits or even landscapes moving your camera up or down can make a huge difference in the end result. One secret that I use is getting below my subject and shooting up towards them. This makes the subject look larger or taller than it really is. This creates a great contrast, especially when combined with a wide angle phone lens, it makes the subject pop! Try it next time you are taking pictures and look at how cool the angle is.

4. Get above your subject

This one works especially well for portrait photography. When taking pictures I try to get my lens the same level as their eyes or slightly taller then the model. This makes your subject look more natural and gives them more contour to their face as well as their body. Most models are taller then me so I have to stand on my tippy toes to make it happen. Even though I look goofy the end result is well worth it!

5. There are no real rules

Even though I started this article with a rule, rules were made to be broken! Especially with art, after all it is your creation. Many times I have completely disregarded all rules and thrown my subject smack in the middle of my frame to create exactly the vision I had. Play around and see what works for you. This is how you can find your own style and go against the grain if that’s what your into!
